Students were given the reading assignment related to the Dystopian Unit. I had them divide their book into 14 sections (if they plan on reading on the weekends) or 10 sections (if they don't plan on reading on the weekends). Students began reading their books and completing the provided handout that needs to be completed for tomorrow.

We reviewed our ideas for what the poem "Nothing Gold can Stay" could mean, then we related it to what the poem could be saying about the current situation in The Outsiders. Then, we wrote a journal entry of 3/4 a page, located on this slide, and talked about it. Then we began reading chapter 6 with the chapter 6 reading guide.

Students began class by sitting with their debate groups and preparing their first arguement with textual support, then we began the debate. Then, we previewed the poem "Nothing Gold can Stay" in Wordle form by brainstorming how each word could be a symbol for something. After this, we predicted what the poem would be about, read the poem, and analyzed each line of the poem. We then brainstormed what the poem could actually be about.

Today we reviewed the fight scene (Act 3, scene 1) from yesterday, debated the place of weapons in both their society and ours, and listened to the audio adaptation of Romeo and Juliet from the middle of scene one to the middle of scene two.
First, we reviewed who died in scene one and Romeo's motives for killing Tybalt (acting before he thinks). We then debated if the swords men carry in this play should be regulated as in America today. We then watched these two video while students wrote a statement of their stance on the issue:

We stopped at the end of the second page of scene 2, where Juliet is just learning that Romeo is not dead, Tybalt is.
